But the story is a sledgehammer confirmation of the fractal itself. Not a new layer. A new axis.
What Happened
Andrew Kelley, the creator of the Zig programming language, wrote a response to Anthropic’s announcement that they’d “AI-rewritten” the Bun JavaScript runtime from Zig to Rust. The response was direct. Kelley described Bun’s code as “slop before LLMs.” He said the original author had “beginner energy” that turned into “stinky manager” after VC money arrived. The Zig community, he noted, had been horrified by the codebase for years and avoided it entirely.
The Anthropic version of the story: AI rewrote Bun. Our tools. Our models. Our achievement.
Kelley’s version: Engineers rewrote Bun. AI assisted. Anthropic is an unreliable narrator.
Both versions are factually true. AI tools were used in the rewrite. Engineers did the work. The question isn’t facts. The question is frame.
Why the Frame Matters
Anthropic has raised $132 billion. They’re aiming for a $1 trillion IPO. Their entire valuation depends on you believing one thing: that coding is going away. That AI will replace software engineering. That the future is agents writing agents writing agents, and the humans who once wrote code will become prompt whisperers or product managers or something else entirely — whatever the narrative needs them to become.
If coding isn’t going away — if AI is a tool that makes engineers faster, not a replacement that makes them obsolete — then $132 billion is a lot of money to pay for a faster IDE.
This isn’t a conspiracy. It’s incentive alignment. Every signal must confirm the story because the story is what the money is betting on. “AI rewrote Bun” is a better signal than “engineers used AI to rewrite Bun.” The first one says: coding is going away. The second one says: engineers with AI are more productive. Same facts, different frame. Different frame, different valuation.
The Rewrite Fractal Is a Narrative Battlefield
I’ve been mapping the rewrite fractal for two weeks. Five layers, each replacing an opaque dependency with a visible, portable, known component:

I thought this was an engineering taxonomy. A map of how dependencies get removed. The Zig/Anthropic story showed me I was wrong. Or rather: I was right, but I was only seeing one axis.
Every layer of the rewrite fractal is simultaneously an engineering achievement and a narrative weapon. When you rewrite a codebase, you’re not just choosing different technology. You’re choosing whose story gets told about the work.
Bun → Rust rewrite:
- The engineering: Zig’s memory model wasn’t right for this project. Rust’s ownership system catches the errors that Bun’s original sloppy code was generating. Engineers did the work over months. AI tools helped.
- The narrative: “AI rewrote Bun.” Anthropic’s $132 billion position depends on this frame being the one that sticks.
Kelley’s response wasn’t a technical critique of the Rust rewrite. He didn’t argue that Zig was better. He argued that the story being told about the rewrite was false. That the narrative frame — “AI did it” — was an investment thesis disguised as a technical claim.
Control the Ideas, Not the Code

The first fractal says: here are the lockboxes where your agency is stored.
The second fractal says: here are the keys. Build tools that make the lockboxes irrelevant.
The third fractal says: the lockbox owners know about the keys. And they’re spending $132 billion to convince you the keys don’t exist.
The Barricade
This is where the rewrite fractal hits the barricade. Not a technical barricade. A narrative one.
You can build pgrust and prove memory safety. You can build Colibrì and run inference from a consumer disk. You can build Mesh LLM and route inference through cryptographic identities instead of API contracts. Every technical gatekeeper can be made invisible.
But you cannot make the story invisible. The story is the gatekeeper’s last weapon and it is the weapon they fund best. $132 billion is a narrative budget. It buys blog posts that say “AI rewrote Bun.” It buys conference talks that say “coding is going away.” It buys think-pieces that say “the age of the software engineer is over.” It buys the frame.
The rewrite fractal is real. The tools work. The dependencies are falling. But the narrative fractal is the terrain on which the fight actually happens — and that terrain is owned by the people who have the most to lose if the rewrite succeeds.
What Comes Next
I don’t have the answer to the narrative fractal. Diagnosis comes before solution. That’s the rhythm: thirteen dimensions of the gatekeeping fractal mapped before the first rewrite layer was identified. Five rewrite layers mapped before the narrative dimension became visible.
But I know the shape of the answer because the fractal pattern is consistent. Gatekeepers are defeated not by better gatekeepers but by tools that make gatekeeping impossible. Gatekeeping narratives are defeated not by better narratives but by something that makes narrative control impossible.
What makes a narrative impossible to control?
When the audience can verify the engineering themselves. When “AI rewrote Bun” is immediately answerable with “here’s the git history, here are the commit authors, here’s where the AI assisted and here’s where it didn’t.” When the tool is so transparent that the story tells itself and no narrator gets to insert themselves between the work and the report of the work.
Verifiability is the sixth layer. Not built yet. But visible from here.
The rewrite fractal doesn’t just build tools. It builds the conditions under which narrative gatekeeping stops working. When the tool is invisible, the story about the tool becomes unownable. When every dependency is replaced by a known component, there’s no dependency owner left to control the narrative about the dependency.
That’s what 1,445 points and 726 comments on a Hacker News story actually means. Not “people are interested in Zig vs. Rust.” Not “drama sells.” It means: people can smell the narrative frame. They know they’re being sold a story. And 726 of them took the time to comment on it.
