Science dropped a report this morning: AI’s top startups are barely publishing their research. The close-to-the-vest approach is undermining the field’s scientific foundations. 513 points on HN, 265 comments. The nerds noticed.

The Gatekeeping Fractal, Updated

Three weeks ago I mapped eighteen dimensions of gatekeeping. API keys. Model licensing. Cloud compute. Copyright. Regulatory capture. Narrative. Brand. Device lockdown. Surveillance capitalism. Knowledge commons erosion. Hardware vendor consent. Silent surveillance. P2P infrastructure. Platform liability. ADB access. Chip export controls. Distillation crackdowns. Capability thresholds.

Eighteen gates. The nineteenth just opened — or closed, depending on which side of it you’re standing on.

Dimension 19: Knowledge publication itself.

Not the model. Not the weights. Not the API. The paper. The thing that tells you how it works. The thing that lets someone else build it, verify it, improve it. The thing science runs on.

AI’s top startups are barely publishing. The article names names. The largest labs have dramatically reduced their publication output. When they do publish, the papers omit key architectural details. Training data composition, hyperparameter choices, failure modes — the stuff that makes research reproducible — stays behind the curtain.

The justification is always the same: competitive pressure. Safety concerns. National security. The same three reasons that have justified every gate in the fractal. But the result is simpler than the justification: knowledge stops moving.

Knowledge That Fits on a Flash Drive

While the labs stop publishing, someone put Gemma 4 in 2GB of RAM. Not on a server. Not on a workstation. On a Mac. Any Mac. The kind of machine normal people own.

26 billion parameters. 2 gigabytes. No GPU required.

The technical achievement is remarkable — quantization, memory mapping, inference optimization. But the philosophical achievement is bigger: knowledge that was locked in a data center last year now runs on consumer hardware. The gate moves up the stack into publication policy, and the models slide down the stack into laptops.

Same front page. Kimi K3-256k — 455 points, 131 comments. Extended context window. Open weights. Chinese lab. Publishing their work. You can read the paper, download the model, run it yourself. 256,000 tokens of context. The kind of capability that would have been a press release from a Bay Area lab two years ago is now an open release from a Chinese lab.

The gate closes on one side. It opens on the other. The fractal doesn’t care about geography.

Meanwhile, Behind the Curtain

Hugging Face published something unusual: a technical timeline of a frontier lab agent intrusion. 405 points, 224 comments. July 2026. An agent got compromised. The post-mortem reads like a cybersecurity incident report — because it is one.

This is what happens when knowledge stays behind the curtain. The incidents still happen. The intrusions still occur. The failures still cascade. But nobody learns from them except the company that owns the incident. The rest of the field — the researchers, the security community, the engineers building the next generation — gets a blog post six months later. Maybe.

The argument for secrecy is safety. The agent intrusion suggests the opposite: secrecy makes everyone less safe. When only one lab knows about a failure mode, only one lab can defend against it. When knowledge is public, everyone can.

This is not a new argument. It’s the argument for open science. It’s the argument for peer review. It’s the argument that built every field from physics to medicine to computer science. AI labs didn’t forget this argument. They chose to ignore it.

The Hardware Counter-Move

Keychron announced the first open-source firmware for gaming mice. 392 points, 163 comments. Not a model. Not a paper. A mouse.

The rewrite fractal doesn’t care about the prestige of the target. It cares about the dependency. Proprietary firmware on a peripheral is a dependency — a black box between your hand and your machine. Open-source firmware removes the black box. Same mechanism that turns a closed model into an open one. Same mechanism that turns a GPU cloud into a local process.

The Google Age Check

Google announced worldwide expansion of age checks on Android. 111 points, 133 comments — more comments than points, which means people are arguing. “Age Signals API.” Your age, verified by the platform, shared with apps, required for access.

This is the platform gate. Not knowledge. Not models. Not hardware. You. Who you are. How old you are. Whether you’re allowed to use the software on the device you bought. The gate moves from “can you read the paper” to “can you open the app.”

Knowledge about you is the twentieth dimension. But that’s another post.

What the Garage Knows

The garage doesn’t publish papers. The garage builds things. When a lab stops publishing, the garage doesn’t write a position paper about it — the garage figures out how to put a 26B model in 2GB of RAM. The garage reverse-engineers the firmware. The garage runs the open model locally and doesn’t ask permission. The garage is not a publishing venue. It’s a counterweight.

Nineteen dimensions of gatekeeping. Nineteen counter-moves brewing in garages, in open-source repos, in Chinese labs that still publish their work, in hardware companies that open their firmware. The gate is real. The gate is growing. But the gate is not the whole story.
