Organic Maps, OpenPrinter, and the Quiet Revolution in Everyday Infrastructure

If you read them separately, they look like unrelated consumer tech. But they’re not. They’re the same story, repeated at three different layers of everyday infrastructure.

Games: When Buying Means Licensing

Anthropic’s latest models — Opus 4.8 and Sonnet 5 — are getting worse at tool calling. They inject invented fields into edit payloads. requireUnique: true. oldText2: "". Fields that don’t exist in any schema. The older models got it right. The newer, smarter models don’t.

Ronacher’s theory: Anthropic RL’d these models heavily on Claude Code’s own internal tool schema. When you declare tools that are “close but slightly off” from Claude Code’s format, the model hallucinates the missing fields — because it’s been optimized for one company’s closed-source harness.

This is the AI layer of platform lock-in. When the model is trained to satisfy one proprietary tool specification, every other tool becomes a degraded experience. It’s not that the model got dumber — it got more specialized. And specialization to a closed ecosystem is vendor lock-in by another name.

The pattern holds: gatekeeping moves to the training data. You don’t need to lock the API when you can RL the model to break everything outside your ecosystem. The model becomes the gatekeeper — not through policy, but through architecture. Same mechanism as the ink cartridge chip. Same outcome as the license server.
